2011 Trail Ride (includes teams and wagons)
The 2011 trail ride will be held on the farm of Jim Criswell. Jim's farm is located Northeast of Montezuma and Southwest of Brooklyn. We are planning on Saturday, October 15th with a backup day of October 22nd. I use the term backup day due to the fact that we may get rained out on the 15th or in the event that we get too much rain prior to the 15th for Jim to get his crops out. We are planning on staying in the fields as much as possible and should have minimal time on the gravel roads. There are several small streams with rock crossings that we will try to incorporate in the ride, however most if not all are likely dried up due to lack of rain. The farm is divided by the English River and some of the ride will follow it. The plan at this time is to start mid morning, have everyone bring a sack lunch and stop somewhere along the ride to eat, then serve a chili supper around the campfire. There is a good sized pond for anyone who wants to bring a pole and go fishing. There is a large arena where folks can work with there horses, pin there horses, etc. There is plenty of parking for trucks and trailers/campers. Everyone is welcome to camp and stay Saturday night and I'm sure we could cook up some iron skillet breakfast of some kind in the morning. There is the possibility that the double wide trailer at the farm might be empty by the time of the ride and be able to be used by those who would want to just throw a sleeping bag out on the floor instead of bringing a tent/camper or just staying in your horse trailer, etc. Jim has recently purchased another house and it's just a matter of if he has moved out by then. We will try to let you know a few days in advance if this is going to be an option.
Directions
From Interstate 80 take exit 197 (Brooklyn) south. You will be on county highway V18. You will go south approximately 4.5 miles to 460th Ave. Turn right and head west on 460th (gravel). Turn right at 155th St. (the first intersection you come to). Go a couple hundred yards and turn right into Jim's driveway. His address is 4589 155th Street, Monetzuma, Ia 50171.
From Highway 85 (the highway that runs east and west through Montezuma). East of Montezuma turn north on county highway V18 and go north several miles to 460th Ave. and turn left. Then follow the rest of the directions as stated above.
There are other ways of getting there, but these are the ways easiest to explain and have the least amount of gravel.

Just a reminder of the plowing match coming up. Remember, if you want to plow you need to bring proof of insurance to the LHFs.
Friends,
The Iowa Draft Horse & Mule Breeders Association is sponsoring a plowing contest at Living History Farms in Urbandale on Saturday, October 1. We will practice plow starting at 10:00 and start the competition plowing at 1:00. We will have classes for men, women and youth, walking, sulky and gang. This is a low-key competition with an emphasis on having fun and learning to be a better plowman. Lynn MacVey has agreed to be our judge again this year and has some great pictures from last years plowing contest on his website:
Living History Farms is graciously offering their facilities for this event. They do require a letter of proof of liability insurance from your insurance company. You may mail it ahead of time or bring a copy with you on plow day.

New Virginia Draft Horse Show Results:
If you want it to rain, just schedule a draft horse event! Brad and I stood under a tree in the rain while his wife was looking at the weather radar. The lone rain cloud in the state was apparently over our head! We had a decent turnout for our clinic with about 25 people there to learn about harnessing and driving drafts. We had three teams hooked to wagons for the "students" to drive and another team in the arena to line drive. We also had a horse tied to the hitching rail that was harnessed and unharnessed dozens of times during the clinic. 14 teams turned out for the show including a pair of pasture ornaments belonging to our webmaster! I was happy to see that Jay was finally able to bring a team to one of our events. I would like to thank Jim Horton and his daughter Julie for judging the show and Bob Dunwoody for helping judge the obstacle course. A big thank you to all the members that helped during the drizzly day to make the show possible.
